Just last
week I was perusing the website of one of my favorite
restaurants, The Modern, and I was sad to discover that they've
taken an axe to their extended eight-course tasting menu.
What I
didn't realize, however, is that many other restaurants in NYC have made
similar changes in the past year. According to an article posted yesterday on Eater NY, popular
locales including Lincoln Ristorante, North End Grill, and The NoMad, among
others, have cut down or completely eliminated their extended
tasting menus in exchange for fewer-coursed prix-fixe options. In fact, it
seems that the only tasting-centric venues holding on to their extended
menus are those considered ‘destination’ restaurants or those independent of
larger hospitality groups.
It does make sense, though, for restaurants to cut
back on courses what with the state of the economy and rising rents in the area. Not to mention,
extended tasting menus require a large financial and time commitment on the
part of the consumer (about 3.5 hours and $155 for the former tasting at
The Modern and a whopping 4 hours and $225+ at places like Eleven Madison Park,
Chef's Table Brooklyn Fare, and Per Se). So while
I'm bummed that many of NYC’s extended tasting menus are getting guillotined, I
can certainly appreciate the influx of abbreviated and less costly prix-fixe
options available.
