NYC CULINARY NEWS: WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW

Tavern on the Green in its heyday
Central Park landmark Tavern on the Green will be back in business with a more casual vibe on April 24th after being closed to diners since 2009. The eatery’s now-700 seats (formerly 1,200) are already filled for opening day brunch where Chef Katy Sparks, who never ate at the former TOG, will be running the show. Admittedly, I’m pretty skeptical about how well the new concept will work, as Sparks already seems to be excusing a lack of creativity in the dishes by telling Grub Street, “My ego will be gratified by people thinking the food is delicious, rather than it represents unusual ideas.” Needless to say, I’m not rushing to make a reservation.

Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten will be expanding his restaurant empire in a few months with a ::gasp:: vegetarian venue. The restaurant, called ABC Vegetable, will be located within ABC Carpet & Home alongside J-G’s other hot spots, ABC Kitchen and ABC Cocina.

Speaking of Chef Vongerichten, The New York Times food critic Pete Wells tweeted today that he will be re-reviewing the chef’s flagship restaurant, Jean-Georges, on behalf of the publication. Former NYT food critic Frank Bruni awarded Jean-Georges four stars in his 2006 review. What with J-G being my favorite restaurant in the city, I hope Wells upholds the high rating!
